Verse of the day

Sunday 30 May 2010

Your gift will make room for you!

Proverbs 18: 16A man’s gift maketh room for him, and bringeth him before great men.

It is a mans gift that’s makes room for him. What is also good news is that it has nothing to do with your background or where you come from.

Lets examine this account.

Judges 11: 1

1Now Jephthah the Gileadite was a mighty man of valour, and he was the son of an harlot: and Gilead begat Jephthah.

2And Gilead’s wife bare him sons; and his wife’s sons grew up, and they thrust out Jephthah, and said unto him, Thou shalt not inherit in our father’s house; for thou art the son of a strange woman.

Judges 11: 4 – 7

4And it came to pass in process of time, that the children of Ammon made war against Israel.

5And it was so, that when the children of Ammon made war against Israel, the elders of Gilead went to fetch Jephthah out of the land of Tob:

6And they said unto Jephthah, Come, and be our captain, that we may fight with the children of Ammon.

7And Jephthah said unto the elders of Gilead, Did not ye hate me, and expel me out of my father’s house? and why are ye come unto me now when ye are in distress?

Judges 11: 32

32So Jephthah passed over unto the children of Ammon to fight against them; and the LORD delivered them into his hands.

Jephthah the Gileadite was a son of a harlot and because of this his other brothers threw him out of the house.

However, when they needed his help because of his ‘strength’ they suddenly remembered him and overlooked that he was a child of a harlot.

To cut a long story short Jephthah did fight for Israel.

If Jephthah’s gift was not recognised he would never have been called.

This account highlights that it doesn’t matter where you are, your background or where you come from. Just discover, develop and deploy the graces and gifts that the Lord has given you. In due season the Lord will promote you.

Quote: Attitude

God often comforts us, not by changing the circumstances of our lives, but by changing our attitude toward them.

Hey, Do you have beautiful feet?

Do you have beautiful feet? No I’m not asking whether you’ve just recently gotten a pedicure or whether your foot is decorated with corns and bunions. I’m asking you when you last shared the good news of the gospel with someone else.

How beautiful on the mountains
are the feet of those who bring good news,
who proclaim peace,
who bring good tidings,
who proclaim salvation,
who say to Zion,
Your God reigns!” Isaiah 52:7 (NIV)

You see the above verse claims that those who proclaim peace and bring good news have beautiful feet. What is the good news that we as Christians should proclaim?

For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.John 3:16 (NIV)

That is the greatest news flash the world needs to hear. That is great news! God loved us so much he was willing to sacrifice his only son so that we might have life. Consequently we also have peace. In a world full of struggles, turmoil and strife believe it or not people are actually searching for peace.

Many find that peace through alcohol, sex, drugs and the list of empty, damning and detrimental counterfeits the devil has presented goes on and on.

However we as Christians know the truth. We have a relationship with the prince of peace and should therefore desire to let others know.

For to us a child is born,
to us a son is given,
and the government will be on his shoulders.
And he will be called
Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God,
Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. Isaiah 9:6 (NIV)

Jesus Christ is the prince of peace. Only he can give peace that passeth all understanding. When the raging storms of life are blowing and threatening to carry away with it our sanity, security and every thing else that we hold dear, Jesus gives peace. Peace and confidence well anchored to the Rock of ages can never be shaken let alone stirred.

And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus. Philippians 4:7 (KJV)

The world can only experience peace through Christ Jesus. There is no other way. Do the unbelievers always want to be rescued? No!! Do they always appreciate the message of peace and good news of Christ we tell them? No! Does that mean we stop trying to tell them the good news of Christ? No!

Even Jesus Christ was rejected. If he cared about rejection he wouldn’t have gotten as far as the cross. He was spat on, beaten, ridiculed, judged, falsely accused and then crucified. In what way can one be more rejected? But praise God that love got him through the anguish he suffered at Gethsemane and pushed him further up that road he traveled to the cross where it all ended.

The devil and his hosts were put to shame. The power balance was altered. The scale was tilted forever in our direction. We now have a right standing with God and have inherited the righteousness of Christ. Let us share this good news today. Don’t be held back by fear of being rejected or having your ego bruised.

And I, if I be lifted up from the earth, will draw all men unto me. John 12:32 (KJV)

Saints, if we will lift up on the name of Jesus on this earth he will do the ‘drawing and the saving’. You cannot save but you can sow seeds of salvation by preaching the word of God and allowing the Holy Spirit to water those seeds and then will we see a harvest of souls being transferred from the kingdom of darkness into the kingdom of light. What a beautiful harvest that is!

Then he said to his disciples, “The harvest is plentiful but the workers are few. Matthew 9:37 (NIV)

The harvest of souls that can be saved is still plenty but like Jesus Said the workers are few. Why is that when there are so many Christians in the world today? You don’t have to be a T.d jakes or a Charles Stanley to preach the good news of Christ. Simply talking to co workers or friends or just handing out a few leaflets will go along way.

The fruit of the righteous is a tree of life,

and he who wins souls is wise. Proverbs 11:30 (NIV)

Let us be wise today and start winning those souls for Christ. Saints do not grow tired in doing what is good for it is not the will of God to see any man perish. He desires for all men to come to repentance and be saved through Christ Jesus. This can only happen when we as Christian’s wisen up and begin to proclaim Jesus not when it’s convenient for us but at every opportunity we get.

Do you want beautiful feet today? Feet that radiates the glory of Christ? Then go out into the world and make disciples of all nations.

Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.”Matthew 28:19-20 (NIV)

That spiritual pedicure awaits you today. It will not only open doors that no man can shut, it will bring blessings unattached to sorrows.

Again I’ll ask. How beautiful are your feet?

Keys to maintaining relationships

We all need one another. Life is about relationships and we need to know how to keep and maintain them.

Below are a few keys to keeping your relationships.

 Appreciate and value your friends.

If you take your friends for granted you will eventually loose them.

Keep a diary of phone calls and visits especially if you are a very busy person. This may sound funny, but if you don’t, you will wake up one morning to find out that you have drifted apart. This is especially important if you have just met someone and you are just building the relationship.

Discuss any issues that may arise. If you have unresolved issues, deal with them and don’t hope they will just go away without confronting them. Unresolved issues may eventually ruin your friendship.

However high up you go in life, endeavour to keep your friends that were there for you before you became famous.

Respect people.

Return phone calls, emails, text messages, acknowledge cards and gifts.

When you perceive that a person has an interest in you or wants to know you more, receive them and open up.

Give people allowances as nobody is perfect.

If a person asks for your phone number, give it to them and ask for theirs. Its show that you are also interested in pursuing the relationship.

Above all as much as relationships are important, your security must be in God.

Are you living on supplements?

Most people  take vitamins/ nutritional supplements to maintain good health. *A supplement can be defined as ‘ a thing added to something else to improve or complete? Does this mean that supplements are adequate enough to substitute our main diet? No.

I would compare nutritional supplements in the christian faith as books, tapes, CD,s, DVD messages. In these days of technology there is so much christian material out there that we can lay our hands on. While they do have a significant place in our growth, should they be our main diet?

When was the last time you read your bible from cover to cover? When was the last time you took time to study and read the bible yourself? What happened to the act of meditation?

As individuals we need to ensure that we read our bibles daily as this should be our main diet.

Matt 4 verse 4 ‘ Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word of God that proceedeth out of the mouth of God.(How are we going to know every word of God if we are not reading our bibles)

Joshua 1 verse 8, This book of the law shall not depart out of thy mouth; but thou shalt meditate therein day and night, that thou mayest observe to do according to all that is written therein: for then thou shalt make thy way prosperous, and then thou shalt have good success. (How are we going to be able to meditate on the word of God if we are not reading it).

Lets not just live on supplements but feed daily on the bible.

Lets be connoisseurs of the Word of God.

Gods standard of communication

Ephesians 4:29

Let no corrupt communication proceed out of your mouth, but that which is good to the use of edifying, that it may minister grace unto the hearers

Have you signed in?

During a telephone conversation with a friend a while ago an interesting thought sprang to my mind.

Most of us have heard of fire drills. It simply means a test run to see how people will respond in event of a real fire.

Most offices require people to ‘sign in’ when reporting for work. Visitors may also be given identity badges. All these measures are necessary in accounting and ascertaining who is present in a building during a fire drill. Of course the signing in also has other benefits.

The church is no different. However, because ‘signing in’ is voluntary and not mandatory many neglect to sign in altogether. What do I mean by signing it?

I am talking about making yourself known and accountable. Some people attend church but do not allow the church to attend to them. They skilfully sidestep all commitment, do not identify themselves with the church and keep a safe distance from anyone within the church that may require their services.

They unconsciously, or maybe consciously, make themselves loners in a crowd. They are like a person who sneaks into a building and then gets upset when nobody notices his absence at the roll call during the fire drill.

God has placed pastors in the church for a reason. They have a responsibility to guide the sheep; lets make their job easy.

Churches have different approaches or structures to ensure they can account for the sheep. You know the structure in your local church, plug in so you can be accounted for. Otherwise how can anyone ask about your welfare if they do not know you are there?

On the other hand, if the system of accountability does not work, i.e. you signed in but still are not accounted for. Then that is a different story. At least the fault does not lie with you.

1 Corinthians 14: 40 says, ‘Let all things be done decently and in order’. As there is order in the workplace, so is there order in God’s house. Lets plug into the structure in our local church, so we can be a partaker of the blessing. This will make it easy for our shepherds to account for us.

Relationship based christainity is very profitable. If you are having problems in establishing relationships you may want to prayerfully consider a house church.

The lost act of waiting!

In the days in which we live in, especially in the western world, it seems many do not want to wait for what they require. Most services can be booked in advance by an appointment. However, when we do have to wait for a short while we complain and feel that we are wasting our time.

This is probably one reason for drive through food services and unhealthy meals as many are not prepared to wait for the preparation of fresh meals.
When you go for a service and you refuse to wait for your turn to be serviced or attended to due to a delay what is the outcome? You don’t get what you went there for. You abort the result.

*The word wait means to stay where one is until a particular time or event.

It also means to rest, stay, keep still, remain or sit tight.

My friend, the word ‘wait’ and the art of waiting is required of us as Christians.

When was the last time you waited upon the Lord in prayer? Some of us go for short services so we can dash out of church. Even when we do go for prayer meetings and we are told to wait upon the Lord, we don’t know what to do. Some go for frequent toilet runs or just wander in space. What happened to the act of waiting!
Psalms 27:14 -

Wait on the LORD: be of good courage, and he shall strengthen thine heart: wait, I say, on the LORD.

Do you need strength for your heart, then wait on the Lord.

Psalms 37:7a -

Rest in the LORD, and wait patiently for him:

Sometimes we need to wait patiently for the Lord.

Isaiah 40:29 –

He giveth power to the faint; and to them that have no might he increaseth strength. Even the youths shall faint and be weary, and the young men shall utterly fall: But they that wait upon the LORD shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint.

The secret of continuous strength is waiting upon the Lord.

When we wait upon the Lord, we get what we want of Him. God is not like man, He does not run out of resources. One concern of waiting for many in the natural is perhaps after all this waiting, l will not get what l want.

Have you ever queued and waited to buy petrol and it ran out before your turn? This never applies to God.

Isaiah 49:23 (b): for they shall not be ashamed that wait for me.
Lamentations 3:25 -

The LORD is good unto them that wait for him, to the soul that seeketh him.

Ask me why we have to wait? I don’t know, all l know is that scripture requires us to wait. If we don’t wait, we wont get what we want. We will simply abort the result and live below Gods best and His desires for us.

If you are trusting the Lord for something, remember that delay does not mean denial. Just wait patiently for Him, He never fails.

Lets restore the act of waiting upon the Lord.
