Acts of remembrance

When the Lord asks us to remember something, it is always for a purpose. It simply means that we may forget which could have consequences. If remembering some things were automatic the Lord will not ask us to make sure we remember.

Surprisingly, the Lord put something in place to remind Himself of His covenant with us.

Genesis 9, verses 10 to 16: And with every living creature that is with you, of the fowl, of the cattle, and of every beast of the earth with you; from all that go out of the ark, to every beast of the earth.

And I will establish my covenant with you, neither shall all flesh be cut off any more by the waters of a flood; neither shall there any more be a flood to destroy the earth.

And God said, This is the token of the covenant which I make between me and you and every living creature that is with you, for perpetual generations:

I do set my bow in the cloud, and it shall be for a token of a covenant between me and the earth.

And it shall come to pass, when I bring a cloud over the earth, that the bow shall be seen in the cloud:

And I will remember my covenant, which is between me and you and every living creature of all flesh; and the waters shall no more become a flood to destroy all flesh.

And the bow shall be in the cloud; and I will look upon it, that I may remember the everlasting covenant between God and every living creature of all flesh that is upon the earth.

Very interesting. The Lord our God put a bow, what we call the rainbow in the sky so He remembers His covenant with us. This is Gods Act of remembrance.

Has the Lord commanded us to remember certain things or do certain things in scripture? Yes He has. He has asked us to remember the Lords death, what Jesus did for us in the act of breaking of bread.

1 Corinthians 11 verses 23 to 26

For I have received of the Lord that which also I delivered unto you, that the Lord Jesus the same night in which he was betrayed took bread:

And when he had given thanks, he brake it, and said, Take, eat: this is my body, which is broken for you: this do in remembrance of me.

After the same manner also he took the cup, when he had supped, saying, this cup is the new testament in my blood: this do ye, as oft as ye drink it, in remembrance of me.

For as often as ye eat this bread, and drink this cup, ye do shew the Lord's death till he come.

How often do you partake of this ordinance? It can be done at home, you don’t have to wait for your church or fellowship to arrange this. If the Lord says do this, then we should do it.

Acts 2:41-42

Then they that gladly received his word were baptized: and the same day there were added unto them about three thousand souls.

And they continued stedfastly in the apostles' doctrine and fellowship, and in breaking of bread, and in prayers.

Acts 2:45-47

And sold their possessions and goods, and parted them to all men, as every man had need.

And they, continuing daily with one accord in the temple, and breaking bread from house to house, did eat their meat with gladness and singleness of heart,

Praising God, and having favour with all the people. And the Lord added to the church daily such as should be saved.

There is power in this ordnance and as we practice this, we will reap the benefits. There must be a reason why the bible tells us to do it.
